Sowing, Planting & Picking

Yet again I’m sat at my computer because it is raining and there was I going to plant out some more over large plug plants that should have been in the ground weeks ago. Earlier it was fine and so I’d put them outside on the bed which will be there home, but I wasn’t quick enough!!! It’s not ideal planting in the rain as it all gets very muddy and sticky. Hopefully there will be a pause later today and to get them planted. Yesterday was more successful, after a really we morning we had sunshine and the remaining dahlias (apart from the two I missed) are now in the ground. These were either pot tubers, from cuttings I took last year, or well grown plug plants. The tubers I put in the ground a few weeks ago have yet to make an appearance, hopefully they are OK - I’ll have to check later.

With the greenhouse being so full of large plug plants that should have been in the ground ages ago, and dahlias, I’m really behind with seed sowing and may have missed the boat. However I’ll sow some more anyway, there is now room. The light levels will be peaking soon, so not ideal, the tempertures maybe ok for a reasonble length of time, and who knows what the weather will do!!

Plants that have been in the ground over winter are beginning to flower and I’ve at last got more to cut, thankfully. The remaining ‘ranunculus’ and ‘anemonies’ (lots of the corms went moldy), cerinthe and orlaya are strutting their stuff and looking particularly beautiful. Soon there will also be ‘sweet williams’ to add to the bunches of flowers. The flowers are not the only things in the field that is growing, weeds are too. And in the hay meadow the ‘yellow rattle’ has become really well established. A couple of years ago I got hold of a some really fresh seed, scraped a bit of the ground to reveal the soil and scattered the seed. Now there is a really big patch, a hugh step forwards into reducing the strength of the grass to allow more wild flowers in. We are lucky we have quite a few already.

Best go and sow some those seeds so that’s all for now. Take a look at instagram for regular phot updates of what’s going on here if you are interested. I try and post regularly.

Bye for now
